CHAPTER FOURTEEN

But that was all rather more easily said than done. In some ways, it was a relief for Tara to have Brant out of the picture over the next couple of days, as she knew she had to put him out of her mind, and concentrate purely on the reason she had been sent over here.

Nonetheless, absent or not, she found that it was increasingly hard to think of anything but Brant, and that extraordinary – though short-lived – kiss.

She consequently found that her appetite for snooping had almost completely diminished. The texts that came through from Dominic were becoming increasingly urgent, but when she was actually able to get a signal, she found herself fobbing him off with excuses, rather than increasing her efforts to locate the necessary proof. Instead, she concentrated on spending more time with Mimi, who she was becoming more and more attached to.

A couple of nights after he left, she had gone to bed and even dreamed about Brant, in what started as a delicious reverie where the kiss they had shared did not came to an abrupt halt, but their lips remained joined in a burning, sensual kiss that became increasingly heated and urgent. His angry and accusing voice, and the coldness in his ice-blue eyes filled her with horror, and in her dream she tried to speak, to say that it was all a mistake, but with increasing desperation, she realised that she could not get her voice to work at all.

She awoke in the early hours of the morning, drenched in sweat, at first upset and disoriented, and then relieved to realise that she had merely been imagining these events. She found it virtually impossible to sleep after that, mostly out of fear of having the same dream, but she eventually fell into a troubled doze which caused her to oversleep by over an hour in the morning.

When she finally arrived at the breakfast table, it was to find Jenna there, cutting fruit into slices for Mimi.

'What, no Rosana this morning?' Tara asked. This wasn't one of the housekeeper's usual days off, and she wouldn't just have gone, knowing that Brant was away.

Jenna mumbled something, without looking at Tara. Tara sighed. She had no idea how to reach Jenna.

'I gave her the
